Schematic Cut Elimination and the Ordered Pigeonhole Principle

چکیده
In previous work, an attempt was made to apply the schematic CERES method [8] to a formal proof with an arbitrary number of Π2 cuts (a recursive proof encapsulating the infinitary pigeonhole principle) [5]. However the derived schematic refutation for the characteristic clause set of the proof could not be expressed in the formal language provided in [8]. Without this formalization a Herbrand system cannot be algorithmically extracted. In this work, we provide a restriction of the proof found in [5], the ECA-schema (Eventually Constant Assertion), or ordered infinitary pigeonhole principle, whose analysis can be completely carried out in the framework of [8], this is the first time the framework is used for proof analysis. From the refutation of the clause set and a substitution schema we construct a Herbrand system.

A Generalized Resolution Proof Schema and the Pigeonhole Principle
The schematic CERES method is a method of cut elimination for proof schemata, that is a sequence of proofs with a recursive construction. Proof schemata can be thought of as a way to circumvent the addition of an induction rule to the LK-calculus. In this work, we formalize a schematic version of the Infinitary Pigeonhole Principle (IPP), in the LKS-calculus [9], and analyse the extracted claus...

The schematic CERES method [?] is a recently developed method of cut elimination for proof schemata, that is a sequence of proofs with a recursive construction. Proof schemata can be thought of as a way to circumvent adding an induction rule to the LK-calculus. In this work, we formalize a schematic version of the infinitary pigeonhole principle, which we call the Non-injectivity Assertion sche...
متن کاملCutting plane and Frege proofs
The cutting plane refutation system CP for propositional logic is an extension of resolution and is based on showing the non-existence of solutions for families of integer linear inequalities. We deene the system CP + , a modiication of the cutting plane system, and show that CP + can polynomially simulate Frege systems F. In 8], it is shown that F polynomially simulates CP + , so both systems ...
متن کاملCut-Elimination in Schematic Proofs and Herbrand Sequents
In a recent paper [8], a procedure was developed extending the first-order CERES method [4] so that it can handle cut-elimination in a schematic first-order calculus. The goal of this work was to circumvent the problems reductive cut elimination methods face when the LK calculus is extended by an induction rule. The schematic calculus can be considered a replacement for certain types of inducti...
متن کاملOn the cut rule in the calculus of structures
We investigate the proof complexity of analytic subsystems of the deep inference proof system SKSg (the calculus of structures). Exploiting the fact that the so-called cut rule of SKSg does not correspond to cut in the sequent calculus, but to the ¬-left rule, we establish that the “analytic” system KSg + c↑ has essentially the same complexity as the monotone Gentzen calculus MLK . In particula...
